The depth of How is it possible that natural gas fields are so deep?

How is it possible that gas is stored kilometers deep stored.? Where does all the material on top come from? If new plankton would create more gas, would the new gas be at similar depth in a few 100 million years? And would itcurrent reserves be at the similar depths. Andeven deeper in billions of years would these current reserves be, perhaps 10s or 100100s of km deep? What if we could drill that deep? Were these oceans so much deeper? And was there just more land that now has eroded?
