This mineral formation was at the side of a fresh water canal in Gürpınar, Van, Turkey. It was dug out from the bottom of the canal. It is very brittle.

I know that the natural water sources in the area mostly are hard water.

Is this formation a product of mineral precipitation or formed by microorganisms?

$\begingroup$ What is the size of the structures we're looking at? (You should have photographed them together with a scale or well known object). $\endgroup$ – Jan Doggen Sep 27 '18 at 7:39

$\begingroup$ this is of biological origin, the first picture do show them being hollow so they are made by some type of (underwater)life.a finger is ok for scale and it tells how large/small it is. $\endgroup$ – trond hansen Sep 27 '18 at 11:21
