enter image description hereapprox 4 x x x3" & 3.8 lbs so very heavy for its size and it has what appears to be gold strands or filametns throughout it. Not magentic!

I inherited this from my grandfather and all i know is that it's very heavy and it appears to have gold content. It's actually just been sitting around my house as a door prop the past 20 plus years. help?

From the looks of it, I would suggest that it is more likely pyrite than gold. However, it is difficult to say without inspecting it in person.

  • $\begingroup$ it doesn't appear pale and i have found no other pictures anywhere that depict pyrite in the form of strands. The color is def more like gold than fools gold. Where could one take a "rock" and have it tested? $\endgroup$ – Jimmy Clowers Oct 16 '18 at 2:46
  • $\begingroup$ Your local college/university likely has a geology department. You could try emailing them with a request. Most geologists are pretty good sorts. :) $\endgroup$ – Arkenstein XII Oct 16 '18 at 3:03

$\begingroup$ Rub it on some unglazed porcelain like the foot of a plate. If the streak is black or grey, it is pyrite. $\endgroup$ – haresfur Oct 16 '18 at 22:58
