I wonder which rock is most resistant to being cracked apart by a hammer, in other words, what is the toughest rock? What rock is most difficult to mine through? Hardness is different than toughness, and I am asking what is the toughest kind of rock?

  • $\begingroup$ Eclogites and banded iron formations come to mind as being a particular pain to break with a hammer. Also from my own experience. $\endgroup$ – Geochron Jan 14 at 11:04
