Went out hiking after some heavy rains and came across an area that looked like broken glass sticking out from mud. On a closer look this is what we found. Not sure what it is and would like to know if someone can help me find out what it was we picked up.
It seems solid in weight as if it were made of glass. Some pieces are flaky layers that are clear and others are tightly faceted grains that run together. We were hiking a hilly area where it’s usually dry deserted dust bowl central California. I can scratch it with my fingernail. We found them on a hilltop sticking out of the ground. There were these small pieces and some very large over a foot in diameter. I think it's gypsum. It's brittle and I fell like I can snap off pieces if I'm not careful. Some areas are cloudy while others can be clear. Hoping it's not asbestos. Thank you for all of your help!
