Use mesoscale tag for atmospheric processes with a horizontal extension from 2 km up to 2000 km. Examples are: thunderstorms, sea breezes, squall lines, fronts, tropical cyclones

Mesoscale meteorology is divided into three subclasses:

  • Meso-alpha: 200–2000 km, e.g. fronts, tropical cyclones
  • Meso-beta: 20–200 km, e.g. orographic cyclones, squall lines
  • Meso-gamma: 2–20 km, e.g. high convection, thunderstorms
